A timber-framed luxury log home in a misty Ontario pine forest

Est. in Forest & Field

Heirloom log estates, designed where they will stand.

Bauernhaus & Co. is a private atelier of architects, engineers, interior designers and timber craftspeople. Our first meeting is held on the land you intend to inhabit — never in an office.

The House as Inheritance

We do not build cabins. We build the roomsyour grandchildren will remember.

Every Bauernhaus residence is conceived as a singular work — anchored to its site, raised by a single team, and joined by hand from timber that is older than any of us. We carry the design from the first walk across your land to the last stone laid in the hearth.

01

One Team. Every Trade.

Architects, structural engineers, interior designers, master timber framers and finish craftspeople — all in-house, under one signature.

02

Read the Land

Slope, wind, water and canopy are studied before a foundation is placed. The house yields to the terrain; it never dominates it.

03

WOOD WITH PROVENANCE

Red Cedar, Douglas Fir and White Pine sourced from select stands in Northern Ontario and British Columbia.

Great room interior with stone fireplace and timber beams

Interiors

Stone hearths. Cathedral beams. Glass to the wilderness.

Our interiors are quiet by intention. Hand-peeled cedar columns rise into open trusses; oversized glazing brings the forest indoors; stone, drawn from regional quarries, draws the eye to the fire.

We design every detail — millwork, hardware, lighting plan — as one continuous composition.

Three Timbers

From two old forests

We select every tree by hand. Our timbers are graded by a single forester before they ever reach the mill.

Western Red Cedar

Western Red Cedar

British Columbia

Rot-resistant, soft-warm, ideal for exteriors and exposed structure.

Douglas Fir

Douglas Fir

British Columbia

Dense, dimensionally stable — our preferred fibre for primary trusses.

Eastern White Pine

Eastern White Pine

Northern Ontario

Pale, hushed grain. Quiet in the room, generous in scale.

Architect meeting on raw land

The First Meeting

We come to your land before we draw a single line.

A project lead — and, when warranted, our forester — walks the site with you. We mark sightlines, listen to the wind, locate the hearth. Only then does design begin.

Our Process

A house begun this season
stands for a century.

We accept a small number of commissions each year. Tell us about your land and we will arrange a visit.
